5 WORST Things to Wear in a Job Interview
5 WORST Things to Wear in a Job Interview When you are preparing for a job interview, everyone knows that you donât just need to prepare yourself mentally; you also have to prepare yourself physically. You want to make a good impression, right from the first moment your interviewer lays his or her eyes on you. Naturally, you will want to look spiffy, smart and well-groomed. If you would like to make a good impression during your job interview, then here are the 5 things that you should avoid wearing at all costs. 1. Cleavage-Bearing Top: In general, do not show skin. You are going to an interview, not a date. So if you would like to be taken seriously, skip the push-up bra and the plunging neckline. It will turn off your interviewer, and it will minimize your chances of getting the job, without you even saying one word. If you are male, then button up that shirt! Your interviewer would never want to see your chest hair or lack thereof. 2. Wrinkled Clothes: Nothing says âunpreparedâ more than a set of obviously wrinkled clothes. You donât need to wear designer clothes to your interview, but at least make sure that they are clean and neatly pressed. In general, avoid unkempt clothes. Hem those slacks; donât let it drag along the floor while you are walking. Make sure your jacket or blazer fits you well. Avoid looking lousy, as if you had no thought or effort at all in going to this interview. 3. Red Lipstick: Put the seductress act away. You do not want to intimidate your interviewer; you want to show him or her that you are capable. If you want to wear make-up, tone down the lipstick. Again, this is not a date. If you stay clear off the red lipstick, you will even avoid embarrassing yourself by getting red lipstick on your teeth. 4. Sneakers: Unless you are applying for a creative position, ditch the sneakers. Donât attempt a GQ model style and wear sneakers with that suit. While it may look stylish and quirky, it does not do much for your interview prospects. It just seems immature and trying too hard when you come to a job interview in sneakers. It also looks lazy, as if you could not be bothered with putting on a nice pair of shoes for this interview. In the same vein, women should try to avoid wearing flat and open-toed sandals. It looks really unkempt, and too casual for a job interview. 5. Unnecessary Accessories: Keep it simple. If you have several ear piercings, skip wearing a few, just leave a pair on. Even if this is your form of expressing yourself, it can be distracting for your interviewer, and might deviate them from focusing on your capabilities for the company. Skip the bangles as well. While these may be fashionable, it will be extremely distracting and annoying, as it clatters and jangles while you are speaking with your interviewer. Just avoid these 5 things, and you will be on your way to looking great on your interview! Now read what TO wear to an interview

Workplace Fashion for Women at Work
Workplace Fashion for Women at Work Workplace fashion has undergone a lot of changes over the last several decades. Watch just one episode of Mad Men, and youll be awestruck by the impeccably tailored silhouettes of everyone from secretaries to marketing execs. Times have changed, and workplace fashion options have become as diverse as the current career choices. The small business environment presents a lot of opportunities for women to diversify their wardrobe. Perhaps your boss works in pajamas at your tech startup, or maybe Armani is the uniform of choice at your small law firm. No matter what the predominant fashion is in your office, youâll want to blend in while standing out in all the right ways. The tech industry has had a huge influence on workplace fashion. Employees who sit behind computers, and only interact with clients via email or Skype dont need to get all dressed up. Ratty jeans and sneakers, or even shorts and flip-flops have become de rigueur at a lot of tech firms. As long as theyre presentable from the waist up for the webcam, the emphasis can remain on the deliverables theyre producing, and not what theyre wearing. Outside of career fields that require some sort of uniform, such as plumbers and exterminators, many workplaces have given up stuffy business attire in favor of business casual. This can do a lot for morale. If employees are comfortable, theyre more productive. But there are a couple of things to keep in mind. In some businesses, the customer almost expects the employees to dress casually. At a car dealership, for example, a salesperson may be outside all day helping customers, or even crawling around inside cars showing off their features. Khakis and polo shirts make sense, especially when the weathers warm. No one wants to deal with a sweaty salesperson decked out in polyester. Even office-based businesses can go the business casual route if they dont see clients face to face. On those days when a client may be in-house for a meeting, give the employees a heads up to dress appropriately. Business casual attire can even be presented as a perk when hiring. A lot of people will appreciate being able to wear everyday clothes, not just for comfort, but because it can save them money if they dont have to buy a second, business wardrobe. Just make sure you spell out the rulesâ"no torn jeans, no sneakers, etc. The main thing is to figure out whats right for you. If you like to wear a suit to work every day, but you dont mind if your employees dress more casually, let them know they dont have to emulate your wardrobe. By the same token, if you want your employees to be productive and remain professional, dont come to work in ratty shorts and a paint-splattered T-shirt. Decide what kind of dress code you want, and then stick with it. Once thats out of the way, you can focus on getting the job done. Why Self Education Could Be The Best Route For Your Development
Why Self Education Could Be The Best Route For Your Development In the world of education, it can feel like it takes a lot of your time to get a qualification that you may not use, at least thatâs how our parents saw it. But maybe you did use that philosophy degree; itâs not for me to say. But in the modern world of high tuition fees and the fewer job options for people when they leave college, it doesnât sound like going away for 3 to 5 years is even worth our while anymore. There are so many people who go to work as soon as they leave school, and they appear to be better off for it because they worked their way up the ladder to a role that earns them a decent pay package. While for those that left college with degrees (myself included) some felt that they have already âpaid their duesâ by going into education for a lengthy period of time. As a result, the option of seeking out your own education is a far more enticing prospect than it was 20 years ago. The great benefit of self-starting your own education is that you are spending a lo t less money than a college kid would, but there are other reasons to seek out your own schooling⦠You Can Prioritize Your Learning A structured course may not give you all information you need, but if you want to learn something properly and bypass some of the basics, the option is there for you. Be warned in doing this though; the benefits of a structured syllabus means that you can gradually build up on skills you have learned, and in trying to devour a big subject by yourself may mean that you wont have the required base knowledge. You Can Learn In Your Own Way There are so many people that have an issue with the traditional school system because it made so much of sitting down and learning something by reading it in silence, but what if you donât learn that way? People are able to learn better by listening to information, some are able to retain information while listening to classical music in the background, and itâs important that if you are embarking on your own self-education, you need to identify how you learn before you learn anything. There are tools online to help with this, and as soon as you have this nailed, you can work with unbridled productivity and at a speed that suits you, making sure that you are able to take all the information in. The Benefits Of Remote Learning As it may benefit you to create your own set pattern of learning, you can also use online courses to further your learning. There are so many quality courses online now, from the Masterclass series to Fresno Pacific Online Degrees, you can find a course to suit your needs. Remote learning gives you the opportunity to learn in a comfortable environment. For some, a classroom environment might bring back some muscle memory about school, which automatically puts a block on the whole learning process. Experience Is A Great Teacher If you want to learn how to build a house, then build one. Itâs something that still rings true to this day, and there is really no substitute for learning something than by diving headfirst into it. A lot of how we learn and retain information is about being given the motivation to learn it, and this is very likely a reason why so many of us forgot most of what we learned in school. But if someone asked you to remember a fact and they would give you a million dollars, then you would remember it easy! If you really want to learn something then go out and do it. Learning by doing is something we donât really utilize that much now because we can just go online, but doing something will immediately place you out of your comfort zone, motivate you, and will help you to learn what you have done right and what you have done wrong. Employers Love The Story⦠You might be teaching yourself a new skill as a hobby, or you might be doing it with a long-term goal in mind, but for those who are doing it to acquire their dream job, make sure that you are presenting your journey to your prospective employers. While you may not have direct experience, you have gone above and beyond to chase your dream, and this shows dedication. Maybe create a website as an online portfolio, and when you are ready, you can use this as your calling card. Educating yourself is a big task, arguably a bigger task than going to college, but the rewards you reap from it are many and will make the whole process completely worth it, not just from the rewards, but the depth of knowledge you will acquire. Dont make these frightful resume mistakes - Sterling Career Concepts
Dont make these frightful resume mistakes Dont make these frightful resume mistakes As a member of the Career Collective blogging community of resume writers and career coaches, this Halloween-themed post is one of many today discussing how to avoid scary career/resume mistakes -or- how to ensure your resume/career costume fits you and attracts your target audience. I encourage you to visit other members responses linked at the end of my post and follow our hashtag on Twitter: #careercollective. How can you keep your resume from falling in the toss pile? Are there ways you make your resume easier to read and follow along? Are there things you can avoid so you dont look like every other resume out there? Yes! And Im glad you asked. WIth Halloween a few days away, lets talk about avoiding some frightful resume mistakes. The walls are closing in on you! Not enough white space. Its more common that you think. You update your resume and the content falls onto a second (or third) page so you adjust and adjust and adjust the margins until it fits. Not the best solution! I never recommend margins smaller than 0.6 or 0.7 inches all around. If you dont maintain a healthy amount of white space, the page loses readability and becomes visually overloaded. Too little content isnt good, but too much one page isnt good either. It is okay to move onto another page you have my permission, with the caveat that you have enough content to fill at least a quarter of the page. If not, consider removing some content or changing the font or reducing the size of the font slightly Death by Bullets. Bullet points are like salt or any other seasoning when youre cooking. You can have too little or too much and it will ruin the dish (errr.. document). A job description that has a list of 8, 9, 10 or more bullets is just not that effective. Theres no rule that says you need to lead off every statement in a job description with a bullet. In fact, the opposite is true. I reserve my bullets for accomplishments and achievements that I want to highlight. I dont use bullets lightly. Try it. Lightening up on your bullet use is a good thing. They will really begin to pop off the page when you limit them. And just as you should limit the number of bullets, you should also limit the length of your bulleted statements. My personal rule is 3 lines max, 4 lines only if absolutely necessary. Theyre not paragraphs they are bullet points! Scaaaarrry font selections. Too small, too hard to read, or too many. For optimum readability, font size should be between 10 and 12 and you should stick with commonly used fonts so as to avoid a situation where a font is not installed on the hiring managers computer. If that happens, you lose all control over how your resume will look on the receiving end. Talk about scary! The other thing to keep in mind is consistency and less is more. A resume should have no more than two font styles in it. On the majority of my projects, I stick with one and alter it with bold, italics, and small caps. If you want to use two, use one consistently for section titles and then a second one for the content of the document, and then stop. Walk away from the keyboard. Resist the urge to incorporate a third font. Template Horror. You are an individual with unique strengths, talents, and abilities. You want to stand out in the job search process. You need to in todays competitive marketplace. So then why are you still using a Microsoft Word resume template that you first created five years ago? If anything shouts cookie cutter, its opening up a resume and seeing a Microsoft Word template. I realize not everyone is adept at adding lines, shading and other accents to Word documents, but please start with a clean Microsoft Word document and do what you can. It doesnt need to be over the top. It just needs to be original. And if formatting Word documents makes you cringe, a professional resume writer can assist you. Some writers offer services that focus on formatting if youd prefer to maintain control over content creation. So there you have it. Four ways to avoid the horrors that can be find lurking on your resume. Breastfeeding Breaks at Work How Far Have We Really Come
Breastfeeding Breaks at Work How Far Have We Really Come After reading Evil Hr Ladys post on breastfeeding at work about a working mom whose formerly accommodating boss is now putting restrictions on pumping breast milk at work, I started thinking about how far working nursing moms have come and how far they still have to go.Close to nineteen years ago when I was nursing my first baby, I thought about pumping milk at work but was overwhelmed by the thought. Few moms talked about pumping milk then, let alone having time off or a place to express milk. And women who were doing it were trying to find privacy in closed offices or worse yet, bathrooms. The whole thing seemed so daunting and complicated that I negotiated to work at home for the first 6 months (which in 1993 was still fairly uncommon). But I soon decided to nurse past 6 months and made the decision to leave my position to be with my daughter full-time when she was young. Im not saying that the nursing/breast pumping dilemma was the reason I made this decision, but it certainly was a contributing factor. As of March 2010, employers are required to provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after a childs birth. Employers are also required to provide a place for expressing milk other than a bathroom that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from co workers and the public. Its hard to believe that it took another 18 years following the birth of my daughter for this law to go into effect and I wonder how many other working moms over those years cringed while they pumped milk in bathrooms and hoped for the best or just gave up breastfeeding all together because accommodations for pumping were such a hassle.Im also wondering why the one year clause was added as a reasonable amount of time for the accommodation. Every baby is different and many (including mine) nurse way past the one year mark. Each state can decide how much more time they will offer (New York State offers 3 years) but it seems to me that the length of time should be left to the discretion of the mother.Smokers get smoking breaks at work to feed their nicotine habit and no one puts a time limit on the number of years they are entitled to smoking breaks. Few employers tell a smoker when to stop taking smoking breaks, yet they can tell a nursing mom when they are no longer obligated to offer breaks to express milk. Like I said, working nursing women still have a long way to go.
